Apex firefighters responded to multiple small fires along US-1 south of NC 540, the Town of Apex Fire Department reported on social media. Fire stations in the area deployed Engine 34, Engine 32, Engine 31, Engine 35, Ladder 34, Battalion 6, and Brush 32 to contain the flames. The department stated that the largest fire burned approximately three-quarters of an acre and that all fires are now under control. The incidents are under investigation to determine their cause.
The recent series of fires serves as a reminder of the risks that can quickly ignite roadside fires, often caused by sources such as discarded cigarettes, dragging chains, or vehicle malfunctions. In a Facebook post, the Apex Fire Department has urged drivers to "move over and slow down when you see emergency lights," emphasizing that giving space helps protect both firefighters on the scene and other motorists.
