As temperatures in Arlington plummet, the city takes decisive action to support its most vulnerable residents. Effective Thursday and Friday, December 4-5, the city's Homeless Emergency Weather Shelter Plan has been activated, providing a refuge for those without shelter to escape the harsh cold. In line with this initiative, the First United Methodist Church of Arlington will open its doors at 407 Mesquite Street as a temporary weather shelter from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., with exceptions for late drop-offs by the Arlington Police Department, according to the City of Arlington.
The activation of this plan underscores the community's commitment to protect its homeless population when the temperature dips to 39 degrees or lower for four consecutive hours overnight. Alongside overnight shelter, meals will be served, punctuating the city's effort to not just offer a space to stay, but also nourishment against the winter chill. Additional warming locations have also been made available at all Arlington Public Library branches during standard operating hours for those needing a place to warm up during the day.
These actions by the City of Arlington reflect larger conversations surrounding the treatment and care for the homeless community. As outlined in the official announcement, residents who require further information are directed to reach out to the on-call pastor at the First United Methodist Church by calling 817-274-2571 and selecting option 2.
Additionally, for those homeless individuals who might not walk the streets alone but are accompanied by their loyal pets, the Arlington Animal Services Shelter provides a haven. Located at 1000 SE Green Oaks Blvd. and accepting pets as capacity allows – the shelter ensures that no member of the Arlington community, human or animal, is left in the cold. Individuals interested in or in need of this resource are encouraged to contact the shelter at 817-459-5898 for further assistance.
