As Atlanta braces for a bout of frosty weather, city officials have unveiled a plan to open warming centers, offering residents a safe place to stave off the chill. The centers are a city initiative aiming to provide refuge during the impending cold snap which is set to envelop the region. According to a city announcement, warming centers will be operational at various times between Monday, December 29, and Wednesday, December 31.
Commencing operations yesterday evening, the Central Park Recreation Center located at 400 Merritts Ave. NE will serve as the first haven for those seeking warmth, followed by facilities at Old Adamsville Recreation Center and Selena S. Butler Park and Recreation Center; the latter is dedicated specifically for women and children only. With temperatures likely dipping, this initiative reflects the city's efforts to safeguard vulnerable populations against the seasonal drop in mercury. Free transportation will also be provided, which kicks off nightly at 8:00 p.m. from the Gateway Center, a critical component as mobility amidst cold waves can pose a significant burden for those in need.
The activation of the warming centers may be subject to change upon the latest updates from the National Weather Service, which the city will monitor closely to ensure the well-being of its residents. For those interested in accessing these warming centers, the Old Adamsville Recreation Center address is 3404 Delmar Ln NW, Atlanta, GA 30331, and the Selena S. Butler Park and Recreation Center is located at 98 William Holmes Borders Dr. NE, Atlanta, GA 30312.
