Atlanta law enforcement officials are urging the public to exercise caution when engaging in transactions on Facebook Marketplace following a recent theft that escalated into violence. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the incident occurred at a Chevron gas station on Pryor Road, where the victim had arranged to sell an iPhone via the online platform.
In what unfolded to quickly become a distressing episode, the suspect, identified as 18-year-old Jacon Beasley, allegedly snatched the phone and attempted to flee the scene in his truck. In the process, he struck the seller with his vehicle. Reports suggest that Beasley then collided with a gas pump before a witness intervened to detain him until police arrived. The arresting officers took Beasley into custody and charged him with aggravated assault, theft, and property damage, as noted by FOX 5 Atlanta.
The victim, who had intended to sell an iPhone 14 Pro Max, sustained injuries when the rear tire of the F-150 struck their face, leaving visible marks, as per information obtained by Atlanta News First. With the approach of the holiday season, Atlanta police are strengthening their warnings about the perils of meeting with strangers from online transactions. They advise the public to utilize "safe exchange zones" outside most police stations, to meet in public, well-lit areas, to bring a friend or share your location with someone, and to trust their instincts enough to walk away if something feels off.
