As residents begin decorating for the holidays, officials are reminding the public that the season’s celebrations also bring a significant increase in waste. A recent article from the City of Austin's official website reminds us that in the United States, "trash volume increases by an estimated 25 percent between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day!" With an eye toward sustainability, the article provides actionable tips for recycling the hoards of holiday materials that stack up from gift-giving celebrations.
New treasures often come shrouded in layers of cardboard, plastic, and Styrofoam. The City of Austin advises recycling these materials responsibly. Plain wrapping paper and cardboard, caught in the flurry of unwrapping, should find their way to your blue cart. In contrast, more challenging items like Styrofoam and plastic films should be carted to the Recycle & Reuse Drop-off Center. As for the fanciful ribbons and bows, they may not be recyclable, but they can grace gifts for holidays yet to come if you choose to reuse them.
Holiday greetings are also adding to seasonal waste, but city officials say there are simple ways to cut back. Austin’s guide suggests opting for e-cards when possible. For those who still receive traditional paper cards, officials recommend repurposing them into gift tags or decorative pieces for holiday tables. City officials are reminding residents that broken holiday lights should never be placed in curbside recycling, as the strands can jam sorting equipment and pose safety risks. Damaged lights can be taken to the Recycle & Reuse Drop-off Center for proper disposal.
Officials add that old electronics require the same caution. Many devices contain hazardous components, including lithium batteries, and should be disposed of through bulk collection services or the Drop-off Center to ensure safe handling. City officials are also reminding residents to properly dispose of their holiday trees. Artificial trees can be dropped off at the Recycle & Reuse Drop-off Center to keep them out of landfills. Natural trees, meanwhile, can be set out for compost collection after December 26 or taken to Zilker Park on designated recycling days, as per the City of Austin.
