In a significant boost to local infrastructure, Austin Water has secured a sizable investment for its water and wastewater services. A report by the Austin, Texas, Gov News details the $55 million in low-interest funding from the State Water Implementation Fund for Texas, earmarked for upcoming Capital Improvement Projects. The first tranche of this funding, amounting to $13 million, comes with a favorable interest rate as low as 2.895%.
Christina Romero, Acting Assistant Director of Financial Services at Austin Water, highlighted the financial prudence of this move. In a statement released by Austin, Texas Gov News, Romero explained, "These low-interest loans are critical in keeping the overall cost of construction down. This wave of funding alone will save upwards of $1.5 million in interest over the 20-year loan. These loans allow us to make major improvements and provide reliable service to customers at tremendous value." Moreover, Austin Water's financial strategies have included a recent debt defeasance transaction that will shave off an additional $49.6 million in costs, bringing cumulative savings since 2016 to more than $675 million.
Part of the funding will specifically go towards the replacement of polybutylene pipes, addressing the conservation effort by reducing water loss. This material, used extensively until the mid-1980s, is notorious for becoming brittle and leaky with age. Austin Water will use $45 million of the financial package to replace these pipes, expecting to cut down financing costs by an estimated $2.7 million.
Alongside, $10 million is dedicated to expanding the 'Purple Pipe' infrastructure through the Travis Heights Reclaimed Water Main project. This initiative aims to connect two separate service areas of the centralized reclaimed system and is projected to save customers about $1.1 million in financing costs over the life of the loan. Austin Water has been lauded for an award-winning financial strategy that manages to responsibly handle debt while continuously seeking to significantly improve its infrastructure.
For over a century, Austin Water has been the wellspring of quality, sustainable, and affordable water services for over a million residents in the Austin metropolitan area. They cover a sprawling 538 square miles, ensuring their community's thirst for reliable water services is quenched.
