The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) has released the names of those involved in a use-of-force incident in Wright County that occurred late last month. In an article from December 5th, 2025, the BCA identified the man as 18-year-old Dwayne Trunnell from Monticello.

Detailing the confrontation, the BCA stated that two deputies, Benjamin Skweres and Kyle Phillips of Wright County, responded to a call on Nov. 25 just before 9 p.m. The officers found Trunnell in the street, armed with a knife. Both deputies are now on critical incident leave, Skweres having five years of law enforcement experience, and Phillips, one. Despite repeated commands for Trunnell to drop the weapon, he allegedly advanced on the deputies, prompting Deputy Phillips to use his Taser, and Deputy Skweres, his firearm.

Trunnell reportedly fell but got back up, continuing to advance, which led to Skweres discharging his weapon once more. After running a short distance, Trunnell collapsed and dropped the knife. Authorities provided medical aid before transporting him to a local hospital. The BCA's crime scene team retrieved the knife, Taser cartridges, and bullet casings along with body camera footage from the incident.

The Wright County Sheriff's office has handed over the investigation to the BCA. Upon completion, the findings will be forwarded to the Wright County Attorney's Office for review, the BCA explained, "without recommendation." First responders rendered aid to Trunnell until he was taken to the hospital for his injuries, the specifics of his condition have not been disclosed.
