Bexar County officials have imposed restrictions on the sale and use of certain types of fireworks ahead of New Year's Eve due to persistent drought conditions. A report by KSAT revealed that "skyrockets with sticks" and "missiles with fins" have been banned in an effort to prevent fires in the area.

The Bexar County Fire Marshal's Office has highlighted the potential danger posed by these types of fireworks. As per information from FOX San Antonio, Michael Rios, a local fireworks retailer, accepted the gravity of the situation. "It’s something that looks like this, a rocket that has a stick, or a missile that has a fin," Rios explained, pointing out the potential hazards of these fireworks returning to the ground and igniting brush fires.

While personal use of fireworks within San Antonio city limits remains illegal, the ban for the unincorporated areas of Bexar County narrows the variety of fireworks permitted. Residents have been advised against using banned fireworks and urged to adhere to the guidelines if they plan to set off fireworks on their own. The prohibition went into effect before Dec. 15, complying with state law, and any violations could lead to fines up to $500.

Against this backdrop of dryness and caution, the county is encouraging people to attend professional fireworks shows instead. However, for those who choose to purchase fireworks, it’s recommended to buy from licensed retailers. The county has even suggested that a "designated douser," someone tasked with safely managing firework residue, be on hand during celebrations to further mitigate risk, according to the KSAT reporting.

To enforce these restrictions and ensure public safety, the Bexar County Firework Safety Hotline will be operational from Dec. 20 to Jan. 1, allowing residents to report illegal or unsafe firework activities by calling 210-335-FIRE (3473). The hotline is a measure put in place to deter improper use that could escalate the county's vulnerability to fires during this precarious season.
