As winter tightens its grip, Boston braces for a cold and snowy weekend, per the latest forecasts. According to NWS, Bostonians can expect mostly cloudy skies today with a high near 39 degrees, while tonight snow is likely to arrive after 1 a.m., potentially adding less than an inch of new snow. The snowy conditions are set to persist into tomorrow, with snow likely before the afternoon and a slim chance of additional flurries between 3 and 4 p.m.; the clouds however will break somewhat come tomorrow night as it turns partly cloudy, just in time for a colder dip to around 15 degrees.
In conjunction with the federal forecast, local meteorologists are tracking a storm that could bring light snow across parts of Massachusetts tomorrow. A disturbance currently passing over the Ohio Valley is expected to pivot toward the Mid-Atlantic and could skirt our southern shores early tomorrow, StormTeam 5's Cindy Fitzgibbon detailed, noting "It doesn't really have enough time to give us all that much snow but we should still see some fluffy inches," while colleague Kelly Ann Cicalese added that "The snow lingers longest in southeastern Massachusetts, exiting the outer Cape and Nantucket by midday. So, it's no surprise that this area will see the best chance of a few inches," both meteorologists told WCVB.
While snow accumulation in Boston is expected to be minimal, the southern parts of the state, including Cape Cod and the islands, could see 1 to 3 inches. The expectation of lighter snowfall in the north comes after an unseasonably low start to the season, with Boston having recorded just a trace of snow thus far, slipping behind the average snowfall figures for this time of year.
The chilly weather will not only bring snow but also another wave of cold air; this cold front heralds sub-zero wind chills for Monday morning, an unwelcome guest for those returning to work and school, it serves as a stark reminder that despite the minimal snowfall, winter's starkness remains unyielding in its approach. The snow, starting its retreat from Cape Cod by kickoff time for the Patriots game at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, it will leave behind a cold and breezy northwest wind that will make fans reach for their warmest gear; "It will feel chilly as a breezy northwest wind develops during the game," Cicalese asserted on WCVB.
