A 26-year-old Brooklyn resident was arrested following a slashing incident at a subway station, authorities said. Caleb Polidore, from Crown Heights, was taken into custody after a dispute near the turnstiles of the 53rd Street station on the R line in Sunset Park escalated into violence. The incident occurred around 1 p.m. and resulted in a 33-year-old man sustaining multiple slash wounds, according to NYPD officials, as reported by Gothamist.
NYPD officers responding to the incident found the victim with cuts to his neck, face, and chest. He was transported to a hospital and is in stable condition. Caleb Polidore has been charged with assault, weapons possession, menacing, and harassment. Police said the attack appears to have involved a box cutter, and an investigation into the cause of the dispute is ongoing, according to a statement obtained by Bronx News 12.
The incident occurred while overall felony assaults in the 72nd Precinct, which covers the area where it took place, have decreased by about 10% compared with last year. Transit-related crimes in the precinct have increased, with more than 30 incidents reported so far this year.
Citywide data indicate a decline in overall crime, despite an increase in transit-related incidents in certain areas. Mayor Eric Adams noted that subway crime has decreased nearly 5% compared with the previous year, and said this year is shaping up to be one of the safer years for the city’s transit system, according to Bronx News 12. Authorities continue to respond to incidents as they occur.
