Cambridge residents have something to look forward to come January 2026. A report from the City of Cambridge reveals that all participants in the Cambridge Community Electricity (CCE) program will benefit from reduced electricity supply prices. On top of that, a boost in renewable energy percentages for most will also kick in.
Specifically, those on the Standard Green option in the CCE program can expect a slight dip in price, falling from 14.81 cents to 14.48 cents per kilowatt-hour, while the renewable energy component of their plan jumps from 50% to 75%. In terms of savings, opting for a cleaner future just got more affordable.
For the die-hard eco-conscious, the 100% Green option is witnessing a significant reduction from 16.82 cents down to 14.90 cents per kilowatt-hour. The Economy option also sees a modest decrease to 13.77 cents, adhering to the program's commitment to offering competitive rates. These rates, fixed between January 2026 and January 2029, are a stark contrast to Eversource’s residential price which will be 15.065 cents and subject to biannual changes.
According to the city's announcement, the CCE program isn't just about price drops. From its inception in 2017, it has saved Cambridge households and businesses over $95 million when juxtaposed with Eversource's Basic Service rates. Also, since participants in the green options exceed state-mandated renewable thresholds, they have played a role in dodging upwards of 80 thousand metric tons of CO2 emissions – the kind you'd get from driving over 203 million miles.
Standard Green and 100% Green subscribers also fund the development of new renewable energy projects, such as solar arrays in Illinois and wind farms in North Dakota. These projects, due to the geographical regions they're in – with normally higher carbon emissions from electricity generation – contribute to an even greater reduction of emissions than similar projects based in New England.
For Cambridge residents already enrolled in the CCE program, there is no action needed to take advantage of the impending price dips; the transition is automatic with the January 2026 meter read. Not a participant yet? No worries, Cambridge electricity customers can sign up or alter their plan, sans fees or penalties, through the program's official page or by calling the provided customer support line.
With fraudulent schemes in the mix, the City of Cambridge reminds citizens to maintain a healthy level of suspicion. If you're getting calls about payments, gift cards, or account information and the caller claims they're from Eversource, it's likely a scam which Eversource itself will never initiate.
Those eager to soak up more info on the CCE initiative have the opportunity to join upcoming online information sessions scheduled for January 20 at 6 p.m. and January 22 at 11 a.m. Registration is available through the program's website.
