The Central Florida Expressway Authority is on the threshold of approving a significant expansion project for State Route 408 in the vicinity of Camping World Stadium. As reported by WESH, an investment of $218 million is poised to initiate the addition of an eastbound lane and the implementation of a new tolling system.
This development arrives amidst discussions aimed at alleviating traffic congestion in downtown Orlando. The meeting, which is open for public attendance, is scheduled for the early hours of Thursday at CFX Headquarters in Orlando. If the proposal sees daylight, it will mark the beginning of a path to smoother transit near a nodal entertainment hub.
Further fleshing out the details of the expansion, documents cited by FOX 35 Orlando illuminate the scope of the project. Aside from the extra eastbound lane between Interstate 4 and Orange Blossom Trail, upgrades to nearby interchanges and ramps are on the table, in conjunction with modernizing the toll system.
Hubbard Construction Company may soon find itself in charge of this expansive operation, pending the expressway authority board's vote today. Despite standing against the bids from SEMA Construction, Inc., Prince Contracting, LLC, and The Middlesex Corporation, Hubbard's proposition emerged as the frontrunner. Anticipating a green light, preparatory steps could pivot the area into a construction zone come January, with a view to wrapping up by 2029.
