With Charlotte-Mecklenburg in the steel grip of winter's chill, a collaborative effort between local agencies is addressing the dire need for shelter among the homeless population. As temperatures tumble, those without a home find a beacon of warmth, as reported by Mecklenburg County's official news portal. To combat the freezing conditions, emergency weather protocols were to immediately kick in over the weekend, ensuring additional capacity at area homeless shelters is available.
Partners like Mecklenburg County, the City of Charlotte, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Emergency Management Office (CMEMO), Roof Above, the Salvation Army Center of Hope, and the Hearts for the Invisible Charlotte Coalition are collectively pooling their resources to extend a helping hand. In a statement on the Mecklenburg County website, they pledged to "continue to monitor weather conditions throughout the period." Such vigilance is crucial as the cold stubbornly clings to the city, threatening the most vulnerable with its icy touch.
For men seeking refuge from the cold, Roof Above is extending its shelter services at 3410 Statesville Avenue starting from 4:30 p.m. Women and families in search of shelter can find solace at the Salvation Army's center located at 534 Spratt Street from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., as they have also graciously expanded their capacity in light of the recent weather crisis.
Recognizing the fundamental need to swiftly connect individuals to these shelters, the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) has made the decision to generously offer free rides. According to information provided by Mecklenburg County's statement, individuals can simply inform the CATS bus driver of their destination to any "designated shelter location" to avail the service, a policy in effect from Sunday through Monday, as per the Mecklenburg County website. Moreover, Hearts for the Invisible Charlotte Coalition outreach teams are on the ground, tirelessly working to persuade those in homeless encampments to consider shelter, and supplying winter weather necessities to those who choose to not leave their established spots.
