Drivers in northwest Charlotte can begin to expect some roadway upgrades in the upcoming year. The N.C. Department of Transportation has awarded a $6.8 million contract to Monroe-based TrueRock Construction, LLC for the construction of two single-lane roundabouts aimed at increasing traffic efficiency and safety. The roundabouts are planned for the intersections of Oakdale/Miranda/Simpson roads and Oakdale/Sunset/Miranda roads, according to a release published by the N.C. Department of Transportation.
Historically, roundabouts have been strategically utilized to reduce the likelihood and impact of collisions, prompting many urban planners to consider them as viable alternatives to traditional intersections. "Roundabouts provide more efficient travel conditions for drivers at slower speeds while reducing the frequency and severity of crashes," the N.C. Department of Transportation explained. Construction is set to begin in early January 2026, with efforts to minimally disrupt traffic flow. To ensure this, Oakdale Road closures will be purposely limited to overnight hours—from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Work on other affected roads, however, will be strategically allowed during daytime when it's not peak travel times.
Contractual obligations also highlight attention to community activities and traffic patterns, with restrictions in place reflecting holidays and special events known to increase traffic volumes in the area. The construction timetable anticipates the roadwork section of the project will be complete by summer 2027, but additional aesthetics such as landscaping could extend this timeline well into 2028.
While roundabout construction is frequently a source of concern for local commuters wary of change and potential delays, the targeted approach taken by the Department of Transportation seeks to swiftly and effectively transform these intersections. As plans are underway to ease into these modifications, it's expected to ultimately result in smoother and safer travel for Charlotte's residents. TrueRock Construction, a local contractor with the winning bid, will endeavor to ensure closures do not interfere significantly with the daily lives of those the project serves to benefit. As the N.C. Department of Transportation has outlined, "any closures on Oakdale Road will be limited between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m." to minimize impact on daily commutes.
