Tragedy struck St. James Parish early Christmas morning when a two-vehicle collision claimed the lives of four individuals and left two injured. The incident occurred on LA 641, south of Interstate 10, and involved a 2008 Honda Accord and a 2019 GMC Sierra, the Louisiana State Police Troop A reported.
Louisiana State Police have identified the deceased as 35-year-old Tyreione Parker, 29-year-old Kedrick Robertson, and 35-year-old Gevin Harvey, all from Baton Rouge, and 22-year-old Christina Gillam from Shreveport. According to the initial investigation, Parker was heading north on LA 641 when, for reasons still under investigation, he lost control of his vehicle. The Honda entered the southbound lane and collided with the GMC traveling in the opposite direction.
Parker was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision and was pronounced dead at the scene. The other victims, Robertson, Gillam, and Harvey, were also not restrained and eventually died from their injuries after being transported to local hospitals. A 13-year-old passenger who was improperly restrained in Parker's vehicle survived the crash with moderate injuries and is currently receiving care at a local hospital, as per the Louisiana State Police.
The driver of the GMC, who was using a seat belt, suffered moderate injuries. They too were taken to the hospital for treatment; the extent of the driver's injuries and current condition have not been disclosed. While impairment has not been ruled out as a contributing factor, toxicology samples have been collected for analysis; part of the ongoing investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
In light of the devastating event, the Louisiana State Police have issued a reminder to the public about the importance of safe driving practices. "Troopers wish to remind motorists to always make responsible choices when driving: avoid impairment, fatigue, and distractions," and to "ensure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained," as stated on the dashboard of the Louisiana State Police's community outreach efforts.
