Mays Turabi's dedication to academia and public service has culminated in her recognition as the Fall 2025 valedictorian at Cleveland State University. With a dual focus on Political Science and Spanish, Turabi prepares to take her passion for law to new heights. The pandemic years were formative for her; as she told Cleveland State University's news release, the time spent advocating for police reform to U.S. senators sparked a now-unwavering dedication to the legal field.
While navigating her academic pursuits, Turabi also played a pivotal role as editor-in-chief of The Cauldron. Her tenure saw a return to print, and the tackling of contentious topics ran the gamut from Senate Bill 1 to the challenges of higher education reform, and the ripple effects of international conflicts felt within campus bounds.
CSU honored her linguistic achievements with the Exceptional Academic Excellence in Spanish Award, a testament to Turabi's drive to celebrate multiculturalism. She not only revitalized the university's Spanish Club to foster cultural exchanges but also embraced the flow of multilingual dialogues, according to Cleveland State University's news release.
On the professional front, internships at the Public Defender’s Office and the Northern District of Ohio further united her academic learning with real-world application. "My experiences during my undergraduate career allowed me to apply the skills from both my degrees to real-world situations," Turabi reflected, detailed by Cleveland State University's news release, having navigated the intricacies of the legal system with both a learned and intuitive sense as gleaned from her hands-on roles.
