In a remarkable display of philanthropy, Cleveland State University (CSU) has received a game-changing estate gift from the late Walter and Katherine McCombs, as proudly announced by CSU President Laura Bloomberg. The donation, which Bloomberg described in front of university donors and supporters at CSU's annual Radiance event, amounted to nearly $15 million and marks the most significant individual contribution to the institution.
According to CSU's announcement, the McCombs, whose generosity can be traced back to a scholarship legacy initiated during Mr. McCombs' own time as a law student at CSU in 1976, has made a substantial impact. Walter McCombs' decision to attend CSU was influenced by the fact that it was the only school that had offered him a scholarship, a gesture that evidently left a lasting impression on him.
A significant chunk of this remarkable bequest has been earmarked for the Katherine F. McCombs and Walter Lee McCombs Transformative Impact Fund. This initiative is set to provide high-need students with the necessary support, covering expenses like tuition, room, and board, ensuring they can concentrate on their degree programs. CSU President Laura Bloomberg hailed the donation, saying, "What an extraordinary moment in Cleveland State’s history. We are so grateful for this historic gift," as per Cleveland State University, in her address to the community.
Furthermore, part of the estate gift will bolster the existing Walter Lee McCombs Endowed Scholarship Fund within the College of Law, which is devoted to offering scholarships to law students. Consistent with the McCombs' intention to support education, CSU will dedicate its outdoor plaza between the Student Center and Rhodes Tower, renaming it the McCombs Family Plaza, as a tribute to their profound commitment to the university and its students.
With these funds, CSU is poised to make significant strides in making education more accessible for students facing financial hurdles. As a result, the McCombs's legacy will live on at CSU, not only in the physical space of the campus but in the lives of countless students benefiting from their extraordinary act of giving. The plaza renovation is expected to create a vibrant focal point of campus life, serving as a testament to the transformative power of philanthropy and the lasting impact of the McCombs family's dedication to education.
