A man has been charged after he inadvertently shot himself during an arrest in Cobb County, according to local authorities. The incident occurred last week when officers attempted to detain 22-year-old James Lawrence during a traffic stop. As reported by FOX 5 Atlanta, the attempted arrest escalated into a chase that led to the accidental discharge of Lawrence's weapon.
Lawrence, after receiving medical treatment for his injury, now faces a litany of charges, including aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, criminal trespass, willful obstruction of a law enforcement officer, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. In addition, Lawrence had several outstanding warrants from outside Cobb County. Accompanying him were two other individuals also implicated in the series of events. Aminah Blount, 32, who was driving the vehicle, was charged with a handicapped parking violation, and driving on a suspended license. Tenquantas Smith, 26, a passenger, faced charges of fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, terroristic threats and acts, willful obstruction of a law enforcement officer, and possession of illegal firearms. Notably, Smith also had warrants existing from another jurisdiction, as detailed by Atlanta News First.
This complex sequence of events began with a traffic stop in the parking garage of a Vinings shopping complex, where the Cobb County police identified the occupants of a Mercedes SUV. It was during this stop that the situation quickly evolved from a question of traffic violations to a more serious concern involving firearms and threats. All three individuals were subsequently arrested and transported to the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office.
The county's investigation into the incident is ongoing, however, the immediate legal repercussions for those involved are already taking shape. Lawrence's accidental discharge of a firearm during the escape attempt has now compounded his legal troubles, and with the charges against him and his associates, they could face a significant time in the judicial system.
