The effort to update the Comprehensive Plan started in spring and has featured several "micro-engagement" events, which have drawn the locals out to share their thoughts at summer concerts and Collierville High School football games. With the support of Freese and Nichols, a planning and engineering firm, Collierville has taken steps to ensure that public opinion shapes the town’s direction well into the future. "They bring a fresh perspective that encourages new and creative ideas and helps us think differently about the future," Michael Clark, the town’s Economic and Community Development Director, said, according to the same official statement.
At the open house, interactive displays were set up, and residents were able to leave their marks on the planning process through sticky notes brimming with ideas and concerns. Again, the event underscored transportation as a significant concern, specifically pinpointing Poplar Avenue's traffic congestion issues. Growth was another topic that saw engagement, with residents advocating for smart, deliberate planning.
The public engagement process is far from over, with the town's officials planning to continue with the outreach for the following year. As part of this effort, Collierville is encouraging feedback via an online survey available on their website, aiming to hear from a broad demographic that includes adults and teenagers.
