Colorado is taking a fresh approach to workforce development thanks to a collaborative push by Governor Jared Polis and state education and legislative leaders. The strategy involves integrating higher education with workforce development efforts to streamline how Coloradans are educated, trained, and employed. If we're talking innovation in job prep, Colorado's setting up shop. The state recently released a plan that lays out an interconnected model for post-secondary education and career development, a one-stop resource for the state’s learners, job seekers, and employers.
Governor Polis's initiative came into effect earlier this year following the Executive Order 2025-006 that called for a comprehensive analysis of the existing system and recommendations for enhancement. "To best serve all Coloradans, we are boldly reimagining how our post-secondary education, training, and employment systems are serving Colorado learners, jobseekers, workers, and employers," Polis stated, according to the Colorado Governor's Office. He emphasized the importance of such actions in the context of Colorado’s evolution as an innovation hub and the resulting need to refine the economy and expand opportunities.
Crafted with inputs from educational and workforce leaders, as well as the community at large, the report recommends a state agency that acts as a centralized entity. This body will offer clear educational pathways that connect people to promising careers and opportunities, while also providing employers with solid support to connect with potential future employees. In a move that could significantly lift Colorado's workforce and economic strength, a single department will encompass higher education and workforce development. "We've taken bold action to strengthen career pathways and invest in our workforce of the future," said Speaker Julie McCluskie, as per the Colorado Governor's Office, signaling strong legislative support for the initiative. Such efforts aim to align educational and professional programs with the high-skill, high-wage, in-demand jobs that are powering the economy now and into the future.
