The City of Concord is stepping up its game to maintain its status as one of the safest places in North Carolina. The city, which has been recognized as the 15th safest by Safewise, attributes its success to a strategy that combines the collaborative efforts of police, fire, and communications departments. The upcoming 2026 Citizen Public Safety Academy is a testament to this approach, providing residents and business owners a chance to peek behind the curtain and understand the nitty-gritty of what makes their neighborhoods secure.
Interested citizens should act quickly to secure a spot in the Academy. With registration open only until January 31, 2026, according to details from the City of Concord's announcement, spots are to be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. The program invites those over 18 who pass a background check. Its limited class size of 40 participants ensures a comprehensive learning experience every Tuesday evening for 8 weeks, mixing theory with hands-on opportunities.
During the program, attendees will divide their time between three of Concord's finest public safety departments. Three weeks will be spent with the Concord Police Department, which holds national accreditation; another three weeks with the ISO Class 1 Fire Department; and the remaining sessions provide a dive into the Communications Department's domain, including the 911 call center operations, radio, and fiber network management. This cross-section view aims to deepen residents' appreciation and knowledge of the city's safety infrastructure.
Registration details and more information are keenly available for those interested in taking part. This initiative is an example of Concord's dedicated approach to community involvement, aiming to not only keep residents safe but also to empower them to understand thoroughly and contribute to the safety of their own neighborhoods. All this information and how to register can be found at the city's official website, for those looking to be part of this enlightening experience.
