A late-night walk home on San Antonio’s Southeast Side turned chaotic early Tuesday when a woman was hit in the hip by a bullet, then rushed to the hospital. Police now say the wound was accidental and self-inflicted, not the result of a drive-by shooting, leaving neighbors trying to make sense of the shifting story, as per News 4 San Antonio.
The gunfire was reported around 2 a.m. along East Southcross Boulevard near Pecan Grove Drive. Police say the woman managed to walk back to the Southcross Villas apartment complex, where her boyfriend brought her inside and called 911. She was taken to a local hospital in stable condition and is expected to recover, according to News 4 San Antonio.
Police Update: Not A Drive-By After All
Officers initially treated the case as a possible drive-by after the woman told them she had been shot from a dark-colored vehicle that passed by. After further questioning, the woman admitted the shooting was accidental and self-inflicted, San Antonio Police Department detectives said in a preliminary report, as reported by KSAT.
Investigation Remains Open
Authorities say there are no suspects in the case and the investigation remains ongoing. Investigators have not released any suspect description, according to News 4 San Antonio, and police have held back additional details while detectives work to nail down exactly what happened.
Neighborhood Context
The stretch of East Southcross has seen its share of serious incidents this year, including a February 15 case in which a 15-year-old was found dead outside apartments along E. Southcross Boulevard. That killing has added to long-running public safety concerns on the Southeast Side, according to MySA. Investigators in that case have noted that surveillance footage and witness accounts are often crucial in sorting out what really happened. San Antonio police have not released further information about the shooting involving the woman. This story will be updated if officials provide additional details.
