Winter sports enthusiasts will finally get to hit the slopes at Crystal Mountain Resort starting Saturday, Dec. 20. Following a series of heavy snowfalls, the popular skiing destination is welcoming visitors back with limited operations, as announced by the resort. In light of recent weather-related disruptions, which included an atmospheric river event leading to flooding and a rare blizzard warning, the resort has had to adjust its operations to ensure safety and accessibility.
Despite the hurdles, Crystal Mountain's Senior Director of Mountain Operations, Peter Dale, expressed eagerness to kick off the ski season. "We're so excited to get the season rolling," Dale said in a statement obtained by KING 5. The resort has had to contend with not only unpredictable weather but also infrastructural setbacks, yet through it all, the community and local entities like the Greenwater Fire Department and the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) have provided considerable support.
Travel to the resort has been made challenging due to substantial damage on Highway 410, resulting from the severe weather conditions earlier this month. To accommodate necessary repairs that are anticipated to last through January, WSDOT has set up single-lane alternating traffic on the damaged segment. Crystal Mountain Resort is now capping parking to manage the flow of visitors, a plan that is detailed on their official website, as noted by FOX 13 Seattle.
Guests eager to make fresh tracks should be prepared for changes in accessibility, as the resort requires parking reservations seven days a week. According to a KOMO News report, free reservations are available within a seven-day window, with a $10 charge for advance bookings. Those who have already bought lift tickets but lack a parking reservation are prompted to either secure a spot or coordinate through the SP+ Carpool App. It's a mitigation strategy aimed at reducing the volume of traffic on the compromised roads.
The ski and ride school will not be operational during opening weekend, and the Crystal Mountain Express Shuttle is currently inactive. Available runs include Green Valley Express, Chinook Express, and Discovery, with the added bonus of the Mount Rainier Gondola being in service. The resort has taken to social media and its website to urge visitors to ride with caution due to early-season conditions and limited terrain availability.
