Yesterday, the Dallas Police Department announced the termination of two officers during disciplinary hearings held by Chief Eddie Garcia. According to the Dallas Police Department, Police Officer Trainee III Adrian Alcorta and Police Officer Scott Simpson were both dismissed for engaging in actions deemed as adverse conduct.
Alcorta, who joined the department in April 2023, was charged with Assault Family Violence-Offensive Contact, a Misdemeanor C, after allegedly assaulting a family member. Simpson, part of the force since November 2019, faced allegations of unauthorized release of body-worn camera recordings, which is classified as a Class A Misdemeanor. Additionally, he was accused of improper use of a confidential investigative platform for purposes not related to departmental work, the blog post detailed.
The nature of these offenses speaks to a breach of trust inherent to the responsibilities of law enforcement. Police officers are, after all, tasked with safeguarding the rights and well-being of individuals – both in public and, as concerning Alcorta's case, within the confines of a family setting.
The release of body-worn camera footage can also undermine the integrity of police work, lying at the intersection of privacy and public interest. When an officer, such as Simpson, circumvents protocol, it raises questions about the transparency and accountability of those sworn to uphold justice.
