In an effort to support Detroit's unhoused community members amid a biting winter, City of Detroit Composer Laureate Patrick Prouty is teaming up with local stakeholders for a charitable initiative dubbed Concerts for Caring. The free winter concert series, presented in tandem with Saints Peter and Paul Jesuit Church and United Way for Southeastern Michigan (UWSEM), will double as a donation drive, providing relief to those facing homelessness. Prouty, alongside these partners, encourages the community to contribute essential items for those in desperate need.
With gatherings scheduled at Saints Peter and Paul Jesuit Church, the kick-off concert is set for Saturday, January 10, 2026, at 7 p.m., featuring Gayelynn McKinney’s Straight Ahead Trio and The JC Heard Jazz Week @ Wayne State All-Stars. Subsequent shows will take place on Sunday, February 22, 2026, and Sunday, March 22, 2026, both at 3 p.m., with headliners yet to be revealed. According to a city announcement, locals are invited to attend by securing tickets at concertsforcaringdetroit.eventbrite.com.
This initiative is not the first collaborative effort between Detroit ACE and UWSEM, the duo having previously partnered for the COVID-19 Belle Isle Memorial in 2020. "This is a particularly harsh winter, and I know the region will step up to show how much we all care about each other," said Rochelle Riley via the city's website. Detroit's Director of Arts and Culture, as quoted in the city's official press release. This sentiment was echoed by UWSEM's President and CEO, Dr. Darienne Hudson, who expressed excitement over supporting a series that "brings people together around a shared commitment to help our neighbors meet their basic needs."
Concert attendees and residents are encouraged to donate various items, with the United Way fulfillment center and selected drop-off points collecting goods ranging from household basics to home goods and kitchenware. Specifically, they seek bedding, blankets, dining tables, and small appliances, to name but a few. The Pope Francis Center has outlined a different set of necessities, limited to personal care items like socks, undergarments, and toiletries, which will be collected during the concert series and handed out to those utilizing the Center's services. More detailed information on items needed and drop-off locations can be found on the official announcement.
The initiative also celebrates local musicians and art while addressing an urgent humanitarian issue. By creating a platform where art intersects with philanthropy, Detroit ACE and its partners are striving to nurture investment in the arts, culture, and the greater creative workforce.
