Yesterday, Gary Lansky, 74, received a prison sentence ranging from seven to 15 years for an assault on a young girl at a Detroit park; this was confirmed by ClickOnDetroit. Lansky, who pleaded guilty but mentally ill to the charges of assault with intent to murder, was arrested for the non-fatal attack that took place on October 8, 2024, at the Lloyd H. Ryan Playground.
During the incident, Lansky have lifted the chin of Saida Mashrah, then 7, and slashed her throat with a pocket knife before making an unsuccessful attempt to also stab her in the stomach and the attack didn't end there, he also tried to target the grandmother, who escaped injury thanks to the intervention of bystanders, details provided by local news sources supplemented our understanding of the harrowing ordeal. The young victim subsequently required 20 stitches and has voiced her lingering fear and trauma, stating in court, "I feel scared and nervous, and after this accident happened to me, I didn't want to go to sleep, I didn't want to go to the park," in a statement by CBS News.
Concurrent to his sentence for the attack on Saida, Lansky was also handed one to four years for a separate case of felonious assault involving a family member, as reported by ClickOnDetroit. As part of his plea, other charges, including domestic violence related to an incident in which he was accused of stabbing his wife and her sister, were dismissed; this information was revealed by the Detroit Free Press.
A pending $50 million lawsuit against Lansky seeks damages for the trauma inflicted on young Saida, which came to light in the various reports shared by CBS Detroit and Detroit Free Press; her family's attorney, Nabih Ayad, mentioned the civil action not just as a recourse for justice but raised questions about the motive behind the attack, implying potential ethnic intimidation considering Saida's Yemeni and Muslim heritage, an aspect that civil rights groups had urged to be investigated as a hate crime.
