In a recent initiative to support those grappling with mental health issues in the community, Mountain Vista High School junior Liam O’Brien has provided the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) with innovative "Hearts and Help" tool kits. O'Brien, working towards his Eagle Scout Project, spearheaded the creation of these kits to aid the DCSO deputies and co-responder teams when they encounter individuals facing mental health challenges.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office took to social media to express their appreciation, stating, "Congratulations to Liam O’Brien — Creator of 'Hearts and Help'!" They outlined that the kits included resource cards, journals, stress-relief items like fidget toys, and more; these materials are designed to foster a sense of comfort and connection during interactions where people may be experiencing high stress or psychological distress. In turn, deputies and co-responder teams can now offer a more compassionate response thanks to the kits' various supportive tools.

O'Brien's project is the result of a collaboration with the DCSO's Community Response Team, who helped bring his vision to life, converting it from an idea to a full-fledged community support program. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office enthusiastically believes in the potential for expansion and impact, noting in their announcement, "He hopes Hearts and Help will continue to grow and expand to other agencies in the future...and we believe it absolutely will."
