The City of Dunwoody gears up to observe Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with a variety of volunteer projects ripe for community engagement. In a union of service and commemoration, residents are called upon to honor Dr. King's enduring legacy of fostering communities through active participation. The 10th annual MLK Day of Service, slated for January 19, 2026, is set to include tree plantings, daffodil placements, garden maintenance, and a blood donation opportunity, as reported by the city's official website.
"Our Chapter’s strength is rooted in service and shared purpose,” Dr. Terris Ross, President of the Dunwoody-Atlanta Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc., conveyed in a statement, as noted by the City of Dunwoody. The group will partner with Dunwoody Parks and Recreation to orchestrate the service-centric day. Scheduled activities include planting 86 trees at the Dunwoody Nature Center and 5,000 daffodils at Brook Run Park, to commence at 10 a.m. and 9 a.m., respectively, and a cleanup at the Dunwoody Community Garden and Orchard, beginning at 9 a.m. In addition to these projects, the American Red Cross will host a blood drive, with pre-registration recommended, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at North Atlanta Church of Christ, showing how a collective effort represents a tangible method of honoring King’s message and work.
Residents eager to contribute their time and labor can sign up online for the numerous outward-facing projects. Recognition of such community involvement was expressed by Dunwoody Mayor Lynn Deutsch, who lauded the spirit of teamwork that graces the event each year. "We are thankful for the hands and hearts that come together each year," Mayor Deutsch told the city's official website.
The efforts surrounding MLK Day serve as a manifestation of Dr. King's vision, exemplified through the strengthening of community bonds and fostering unity. As the nation approaches the third Monday in January, Dunwoody celebrates the National Day of Service by encouraging acts of kindness and service that strengthen the community and honor the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
