As the holiday season rolls in, Durham residents should note that there'll be a few adjustments to city services, including trash collection schedules and tree disposal options. According to a recent City of Durham's announcement, curbside solid waste collections and in-person waste disposal operations will experience some delays, with services being pushed back by one business day starting from Christmas Day, December 25, through at least the first full week of January.

For those looking to get rid of their festive firs, the city has provided several free live tree drop-off locations, the Durham Waste Disposal and Recycling Center on E. Club Blvd. will start accepting trees from January 5 until February 7 with their normal operating hours, except for closure days like Christmas and New Year's Day, and there's free curbside collection for current yard waste and exempt service customers from January 2 to February 2, customers need to take note that they should place their trees at the curb on their normal collection day, furthermore trees shouldn't be bagged nor should they have any decorations or stands when dropped off.

Those looking to plan ahead can find more detailed information about the service disruptions and tree disposal on the City of Durham's website, or by using the Durham Rollout app for notifications. The Waste Disposal and Recycling Center, Yard Waste Facility, and the Household Hazardous Waste Center will also have altered schedules during this time, with early closures on Christmas Eve and closed doors on Christmas and New Year's Day.

Parking downtown will be a little easier on the wallet during the holidays as well, Park Durham Customer Service Center will be shutting its doors on December 24, 25, 26, and January 1, however, parking will be free in on-street spaces and some city-owned garages and lots on these days but remember to check the Special Event Parking Schedule for dates when a flat rate applies, and as always Durham's Parks and Recreation, as well as Durham One Call, will follow suit with closures during key holiday dates, for residents who run into any water or sewer emergencies they can still reach the after-hours emergency number for Water Management Department.

For those relying on public transportation, GoDurham and GoDurham ACCESS will continue to run on a normal schedule through most of the holiday season, with only a few exceptions: service will end early at 7 p.m. on Christmas Eve and no service will be available on Christmas Day, meanwhile, Sunday-level service will be in place for New Year's Day.
