As the holiday season winds down, the City of Durham is stepping up its environmental game with a green initiative that's as straightforward as it is eco-friendly. Residents looking to dispose of their live holiday trees can now do so without leaving a carbon footprint in Santa's wake. The city has announced that from the start of 2026, dropping off live trees at the Waste Disposal and Recycling Center will be a complimentary service, available Monday through Saturday during normal operating hours.
In addition to this, Durhamites will have the option to bring their festive firs and spruces to one of the four designated drop-off locations on select Saturdays in January. According to the City of Durham's social media post, "This service is free." The trees collected won't just be discarded; they'll undergo a transformation into something beneficial for the earth. "Trees will be mulched and converted to compost," the city's announcement details.
