A man wanted on capital murder charges out of Fayette County was tracked down in south Maverick County after what police describe as a coordinated, multi-agency operation that ended without a single shot being fired.
Eagle Pass police say officers found the suspect in a neighborhood in south Maverick County, took him into custody without incident, then turned him over to the Texas Rangers in Eagle Pass. The operation pulled in federal, state, and local partners working together across jurisdictions.
Arrest details and charges
The suspect was identified as John Chancey III and, according to local police, faces multiple counts, including Capital Murder by Terror Threat, Abuse of a Corpse Without Legal Authority, and Assault on a Public Servant. Eagle Pass officials said Chancey was located in a south Maverick County neighborhood and arrested without incident before being handed to the Texas Rangers in Eagle Pass, as reported by Fox San Antonio.
How multiple agencies worked together
Authorities say the operation included the U.S. Marshals Service, the Texas Department of Public Safety, the Eagle Pass Police Department and additional supporting agencies. Uvalde police reported that officers and sheriff’s deputies assigned to the U.S. Marshals Lone Star Fugitive Task Force helped execute the arrest warrant, according to KSAT.
What the charges could mean
Capital murder is the most serious homicide offense under Texas law and applies when a killing occurs with certain aggravating factors, including murder in the course of committing a terroristic threat. The offense can carry life without parole or, if sought by prosecutors, the death penalty. The statutory definitions and penalty framework are set out in the Texas Penal Code, which also allows juries to consider lesser included offenses if aggravating elements are not proved.
Next steps
Chancey will remain in state custody while agencies work with Fayette County on his transfer and prosecution, Fox San Antonio reported. He is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
