In a combined effort to ensure the safety of commercial transportation before holiday traffic hits its peak, the El Paso Police Department, in coordination with the Texas Department of Public Safety, has just wrapped up "Operation Safe Sleigh." The joint operation, conducted on December 10th, was aimed squarely at commercial motor vehicles, with officers and troopers teaming up to inspect a total of twenty-two trucks over four hours, making sure they met the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's stringent standards.
According to the El Paso Police Department, this year's operation proved to be more than just routine. Officers were able to identify a substantial 60 violations during their thorough inspections. This ranged from brake issues to challenges with vehicle weight. Unfortunately, eight of these vehicles had to then be taken out of service, temporarily pulling them off the road to rectify these serious safety concerns. A complete breakdown was made available through a press release issued by the city.
The details made public by the El Paso authorities give us a clearer view of the safety landscape. There were an equal number of brake and weight violations, each totaling nine. If that wasn't enough, the operation handed out three weight citations, noted that two of the drivers inspected were non-English-speaking, conducted two hazardous material inspections, and issued six citations for vehicles that disregarded weigh stations. These numbers illustrate how such concentrated efforts are integral to maintain to uphold public safety on our roads.
