Tragedy struck the community of Goodyear early Thursday morning when an 80-year-old woman, now identified as Sripan Roemer, lost her life in a house fire. According to FOX 10 Phoenix, fire crews were called to the scene near Citrus and Yuma Roads just after midnight to tackle a backyard blaze that had extended to the home. The Goodyear Fire Department noted that by the time firefighters arrived, the structure had sustained partial collapse, leading the team to adopt defensive tactics in fighting the flames.
The response was complicated by the "significant storage" in the yard, which AZFamily reports may have contributed to the rapid spread of the fire. "Flames had already began to vent from the roof in the back and there was a partial collapse so crews went defensive," Ruben Real, a Goodyear Fire Department spokesperson, explained to FOX 10 Phoenix. After they managed to extinguish the fire, firefighters discovered Ms. Roemer’s body towards the back of the residence.
No firefighters were injured in the incident. The Goodyear Fire Department later turned the investigation over to the Goodyear Police to determine the cause of the devastating fire. As of now, officials have not to publicly speculated on what may have initiated the blaze, though they have mentioned foul play is not suspected at this stage, as conveyed by AZFamily.
While the community mourns the loss of Sripan Roemer, authorities are working to understand just how such a tragedy could unfold in the quiet streets of Goodyear. Both news outlets indicate that more information will be released as it becomes available. In the meantime, residents have been reminded to review fire safety protocols and to ensure that emergency exits in their homes are clear of obstructions.
