Starting today, emergency repairs to clear debris and fix damaged streambeds will commence on a 2-mile section of US 2 east of Skykomish, as reported by the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). A contract has been issued to Granite Construction for the urgent maintenance work between mileposts 52 and 54, with crews expected to work nonstop over a 30-day period to restore this vital roadway.
The need for repairs arose after severe washouts and mudslides prompted the closure of US 2 last Wednesday, spanning from Index to Coles Corner between mileposts 35-85, a closure that was later expanded to include Tumwater Canyon, reaching milepost 99, WSDOT has confirmed. Although the road was cleared to Skykomish by the following day, travel continues to be disrupted between Skykomish and Leavenworth, and no reopening time has been provided to date.
Additional emergency work on US 2 is already underway further along the pass between mileposts 58 and 70, having started on Thursday, with the objective of reopening this critical passageway across Stevens Pass as swiftly as possible and ensuring the safety and reliability of this transportation link.
