A tragic series of events unfolded as former Sacramento County sheriff's deputy Marvin Morales, 40, was shot and killed by law enforcement following the fatal stabbing of his 11-year-old son. According to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, Morales led officers on a high-speed pursuit that ended near Interstate 5 and Highway 12, where he was shot by responding deputies and later pronounced deceased at a local hospital. The deputies involved have been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation, in line with department protocols.
The chase began when Sheriff Jim Cooper spotted Morales’ vehicle after the Elk Grove Police Department had broadcast a description of the suspect and vehicle to surrounding agencies. The authorities moved quickly to contain the situation, with the California Highway Patrol deploying a spike strip leading to Morales' SUV to crash into a ditch. The incident led to traffic being shut down along I-5 around Highway 12, as reported by CBS Sacramento.
Earlier in the day, Elk Grove police officers responding to a call at the 7600 block of Ferrell Way found Morales' 11-year-old son stabbed and a 6-year-old girl unharmed. The child later died at the hospital from his injuries. Elk Grove Police spokeswoman Officer Cristina Gonzalez told ABC10, "It’s just absolutely awful," and "We never want to see any children getting hurt."
Further complicating the narrative, Morales had been terminated from his position at the Sheriff's Office in February 2024 for drug-related misconduct, including a fentanyl overdose while in uniform which was initially attributed to accidental exposure. An internal affairs investigation later concluded that Morales "used his position of authority to confiscate narcotics and narcotics paraphernalia from members of the public," as per a statement obtained by CBS Sacramento.
The events have cast a solemn cloud over the Elk Grove community, with Elk Grove Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen expressing her heartbreak over the incident: "This is a horrific and senseless tragedy. I am heartbroken to learn that this little boy was killed by his own father. It is hard to make sense of this violence. My heart goes out to his grieving mother," Singh-Allen said, as noted by CBS Sacramento. The Elk Grove Unified School District confirmed the boy was a student within the district and announced it would be offering counseling and additional resources to students and staff affected by the harrowing ordeal.
