A vehicle incident in Kitsap County has resulted in multiple injuries and infrastructure damage after a driver suffering a medical emergency lost control and crashed into a coffee shop. KING5 News reported that the collision took place in Gorst, spiraling into a crisis as the car not only destroyed the coffee shop but also brought down power lines and caused a sewage spill.
The Washington State Patrol (WSP) identified the driver as a 47-year-old man from Bremerton who was transporting his family when the incident occurred. Slamming into Sadie Mae's Coffee, the SUV was demolished, and the two adults, along with two children—a 5-year-old boy and an 8-year-old girl—were hospital-bound as a result. Handling the misfortune of live power lines and exposed sewage, the Department of Ecology was advised of the environmental hazard—KIRO7 News noted in their coverage of the troubling event.
Injuries among the vehicle's occupants were serious enough to warrant immediate transportation to area hospitals. According to a KOMO News report, the adults were rushed to Tacoma General Hospital, while the children received care at Mary Bridge Children's Hospital. Given the severity of the crash, it was also reported by KOMO News that the driver is facing a charge of second-degree negligent driving.
WSP indicated that substance impairment was not believed to be a factor in the crash. Multiple airbags were deployed, which could be seen in a photo shared by WSP Trooper Katherine Weatherwax. Despite the chaotic aftermath, troubling was the report obtained by KOMO News, detailing how the children were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident. While this detail may contribute to ongoing safety conversations, the focus remains on the recovery of those involved and the restoration of the area affected by the crash and consequent infrastructure setbacks.
