A fire broke out in two multi-family homes on Grand Avenue in the University Heights area of the Bronx today, displacing several residents. The blaze, which started before 8 a.m., impacted 2321 and 2323 Grand Avenue. One of the homes housed a mother and her nine children, all of whom escaped without injury, according to information provided to ABC7NY.
Meyna Wienn, a resident of the first home, told ABC7NY that the fire started in the wall, creating heavy smoke. She was able to get her children out safely. Freezing temperatures and windy conditions complicated firefighting efforts, and a car parked in front of a hydrant further delayed access to water. FDNY Deputy Chief Michele Fitzsimmons noted that the cold also posed safety concerns for responders moving on icy surfaces.
The FDNY reported that the fire began on the top floor of one of the buildings and was classified as an electrical fire. The blaze also caused substantial water damage in the building’s basement. After the fire, the Red Cross provided emergency assistance, including financial aid and temporary housing, to six households, totaling 10 adults and 12 children. News 12 Bronx shared additional details on the relief efforts and information on how affected residents can access assistance.
Resident Menya Wrenn spoke with News 12 Bronx, describing finding smoke in her apartment while preparing her children for school. She reported that her son noticed smoke coming from the wall, and she observed smoke in the bathroom and from the thermostat. Wrenn added that her landlord had previously had someone address the wiring, but issues were noted at that time. The exact cause of the electrical fire is still under investigation, and no injuries have been reported.
More than 140 firefighters responded to the blaze, including crews who had to cut holes in the roof to contain the fire. Residents seeking assistance from the Red Cross can call 877-REDCROSS.
