A hit-and-run incident in Orange County has ended one life and left another shaken. Last Monday, a pedestrian was fatally struck on Silver Star Road, per the Florida Highway Patrol. An eastbound 2003 Honda Accord collided with the pedestrian, who was not in a marked crosswalk, WESH reports. Following the initial impact, while the Honda driver was attending to the injured pedestrian, another vehicle, a Chevy Malibu, hit both individuals and fled from the scene.
The aftermath of such events often leaves less to the imagination and more to the cold calculus of emergency responders. After the events unfolded, the pedestrian, a 33-year-old man from Leesburg, was declared dead at a hospital. As for the Honda Accord's driver, they sustained minor injuries, according to statements obtained by WFTV. The community, no stranger to tragedies along this stretch of road, is reeling once again. A resident near the scene expressed a grim familiarity with such occurrences, saying, "My husband said what's going on out there and I said it's Silver Star, what's not going on here you know."
In a turn that perhaps signals a troubled conscience, the driver of the second vehicle, the Chevy Malibu, reached out to the Florida Highway Patrol the day after the incident. They claimed uncertainty, suggesting they might have run over "something" the previous night. The vehicle exhibited damage that matched the collision details, resulting in its seizure as evidence. Witnesses had earlier described seeing the driver of the Chevy Malibu assess the damage to their vehicle before choosing to leave the scene. Some witnesses were dismayed by the driver's failure to remain, with one remarking, "Yeah, that not a human, you know when things like happen and you don't stop, the driver should stop," in an interview with WESH.
The investigation continues as police sift through the evidence, and the Florida Highway Patrol urges anyone with information to come forward. The regional crime-fighting nonprofit Crimeline is involved, offering cash rewards for tips that lead to a resolution. Crimeline has assisted in law enforcement efforts since its founding in 1977, as outlined on the organization's website.
