As temperatures take a sharp dip across Memphis, the city's unhoused population is set to receive much-needed respite. First Baptist Church in Midtown has opened its doors in a move to provide a centralized emergency warming center for those caught in the icy clutches of winter. According to a statement obtained by Action News 5, the church, collaborating with the Hospitality Hub, has renovated its basement on the corner of Poplar and Parkway to comfortably accommodate hundreds with twin-size cots ready to provide shelter.

The initiative aims to streamline the process for individuals seeking warmth, reducing the risk of confusion which, in previous years, "actually left them waiting in the cold longer," said Jessica Houari, Hospitality Hub director. This concentrated effort, as reported by Action News 5, promises not only a warm place to rest but also the provision of vital assistance services ranging from healthcare to help securing permanent housing.

Further details released by local news outlets like WREG indicate that the warming facility began operations last night, Nov. 30 at 9 p.m., with non-mandatory ID check-ins ensuring an accessible and hassle-free entrance for all. The establishment will remain open until 10 a.m. the following day, with amenities such as sack meals and blankets available "while supplies last."

The Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) has been tapped to offer transportation to the warming center to ensure that people can easily reach this haven from the cold. This service operates during the warming center's hours, and those in need can request a ride by calling 901-486-0939, FOX13 Memphis reports. Accessibility for the homeless is at the forefront of the Hub's mission, as they also launch a blanket drive with a goal to collect upwards of 700 blankets to distribute throughout the colder months.
