A tragic house fire in Stone Mountain, DeKalb County, has claimed the life of a 21-year-old college football player, as per reports from FOX 5 Atlanta. The fire began just after 1 p.m. yesterday at a residence in the Water Edge community, razing the home and leading to the death of Izaiah Taylor, who was identified by his grandfather and the homeowner, Gregory Edwards.

DeKalb County Fire Rescue crews were dispatched to the scene after being alerted of the fire by a neighbor. Upon arrival at the engulfed Rockcliff Court home, firefighters were informed by residents that someone was possibly trapped inside. "There was no hesitation in going in and searching for the victim," DeKalb County Fire Captain Jaeson Daniels explained, as noted by FOX 5 Atlanta. "We got here, and we were able to establish a water supply. And again, receiving that information from one of the nearby residents stating that there was some water inside, we actually went right in and performed a search and luckily found him pretty quick, but unfortunately he was deceased. Once we found him."

The scene was secured by fire officials. Edwards recounted to FOX 5 Atlanta the heart-wrenching discovery, "Well, the fire service had the house under their jurisdiction, so there was nothing for me to do. And over time, we found out that obviously my grandson perished in the fire." Edwards lamented the loss, facing the grim truth that no grandparent should have to bury their grandchild.

Taylor, a former player with the Liberty Flames before transferring to Georgia Military College, was back home for the holidays at the time of the incident. A towering figure at 6 feet 5 inches, he was remembered for his time on the football field at both institutions and his high school football tenure at South Gwinnett High School. Details of the fire’s origin and cause are still under investigation. Authorities have yet to divulge specifics regarding how the blaze started or exactly where within the home Taylor was located when the fire erupted, as stated by FOX 5 Atlanta. The home sustained significant damage from the fire, smoke, and water.

Earlier reports from WSB Radio confirmed the death, stating that firefighters entered the burning three-story house after being informed about a potential occupant. They discovered the victim deceased inside, but at that point had yet to make an identification. The DeKalb County fire investigators are currently determining the cause of the deadly blaze, and the investigation continues.
