Former UNC Charlotte administrator Janique Sanders is suing the university, alleging First Amendment violations after a video of her discussing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts went viral, reportedly leading to her termination, WCNC reported. The video, produced by conservative media group Accuracy in Media, drew attention from political figures supporting bans on DEI initiatives in higher education.
After the video went viral, Sanders was dismissed. She and her lawyer, Artur Davis, claim the termination lacked due process and was influenced by racial bias. 'Janique Sanders didn’t violate a single policy at UNC Charlotte,' Davis told WCNC, adding that she simply expressed her opinion on DEI, which is protected free speech.
The Charlotte Observer reported that the viral video showed Sanders discussing the university's DEI efforts under various initiatives following system-wide policy changes. She was initially reassigned to a leadership and community engagement role after DEI positions were eliminated by the UNC System Board of Governors.
Filed in federal court, the lawsuit challenges the university’s termination process, alleging that Sanders was not interviewed and the full video was not reviewed. Her lawyer, Artur Davis, told WBTV that "UNCC bowed to bigotry and the threat of political backlash." Sanders is seeking compensation for lost income and emotional distress, though no amount was specified.
UNC Charlotte, citing policies against commenting on pending litigation, declined to respond. The lawsuit reflects broader national debates over DEI policies and highlights challenges when university actions intersect with viral media and political scrutiny.
