Fort Worth’s latest tech upgrade to its Emergency Communications Center is setting out to streamline the process for non-emergency calls, hoping to make it easier for residents to receive help without overloading responders who need to focus on more pressing crises. According to the City of Fort Worth, a new AI-powered system will take over calls made to their administrative number for issues that don't require immediate police, fire, or medical intervention.

Deputy Director and 911 Administrator Aubry Insco conveyed optimism about the initiative, stating, per the City of Fort Worth, "The deployment of this technology reflects our ongoing commitment to improving public safety service, through thoughtful innovation," which should alleviate pressure on Public Safety Communicators who face the demanding task of managing true emergencies and they'll now have aid from an assistive virtual assistant to keep 9-1-1 lines more available, the city anticipates a positive impact on both 9-1-1 wait times and overall service to the community.

So here’s how the new tech kicks in: when someone rings the ten-digit administrative line for concerns like fireworks, abandoned vehicles, or a traffic concern, they'll be attended by a conversational AI in either English or Spanish, designed to swiftly and accurately pinpoint the caller's needs. It’s an interactive experience, but with an added layer of human oversight; Public Safety Communicators will be keeping an ear out and monitoring these interactions to step in if something escalates to a bona fide emergency.
