DeSoto County is grappling with a serious legal matter as four residents have been indicted for allegedly defrauding public assistance funds through activities conducted from 2020 to 2025, swiping more than $96,993 from taxpayer dollars. Action News 5 reported the details on the indictments issued by a Grand Jury that named Kayla Smith and Sharita Jones, among others, in the alleged SNAP and welfare fraud schemes.

Smith, with the charges totaling $37,852.78, faces allegations of exploiting the state's childcare payment program, and in Jones’s case, a former Mississippi Department of Human Services employee, her fraud amounted to obtaining $20,028.00 through income misrepresentation in the SNAP program. Despite the serious charges, the District Attorney's office stated that there was no evidence of this being part of an organized plot. These individuals face substantial accusations as WREG's coverage highlights District Attorney Matthew Barton's resolve who said, "Let me be very clear. If you steal from the taxpayers of Mississippi, my office is going to aggressively prosecute you."

Captured on Thursday, as part of 'Operation Snap, Crackle, Pop’em,' the arrest effort brought in Smith and Jones, but details on the two additional indicted residents remain scarce. Nonetheless, DeSoto County News notes that District Attorney Barton is determined to ensure accountability, saying, "These funds are meant for people who truly need help, not for those who want to trick the system. Accountability is coming for anyone who thinks otherwise."
