An early-morning welfare check in Frisco turned into a chaotic scene Tuesday after officers said they heard gunfire and watched a man crash out of a second-story window on the 2400 block of Haft River Road. The man was identified as 30-year-old former NFL player Myles Jack, who was taken into custody and treated at a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Neighbors were briefly evacuated while officers locked down the area.
According to a post on the Frisco Police Department Facebook page, officers were called to the home around 5:40 a.m. Tuesday for a welfare concern. Police reported hearing what sounded like shots fired inside the residence, set up a perimeter, and evacuated several nearby homes. A short time later, officers saw a second-story window shatter as a person climbed out and fell to the ground.
Officers Secured The Scene And Witnessed A Fall
Officers took Jack into custody shortly after 7:12 a.m. and sent him to a hospital, where he was treated for injuries from the fall that were described as non-life-threatening, according to The Dallas Morning News. Local TV coverage reported that once the scene was secure, police found no one else inside the home and allowed evacuated residents to return. Booking records listed Jack at the Denton County Jail, FOX 4 Dallas-Fort Worth reported.
Charges And Filing
In a news release, the Frisco Police Department said Jack faces two charges: Deadly Conduct (discharge of a firearm), a third-degree felony, and Discharge of a Firearm in Certain Municipalities, a Class A misdemeanor. Police said the charges were filed with the Denton County Sheriff’s Office. The department also said a search of the residence turned up no additional people and that investigators are still working the case.
Legal Context
Under Texas law, deadly conduct becomes a third-degree felony when someone knowingly fires a gun at or toward a person or an occupied building, as outlined in Section 22.05 of the state’s assault statutes, according to the Texas Penal Code. Separately, recklessly discharging a firearm inside a large municipality can be charged as a Class A misdemeanor, under Section 42.12 of the disorderly conduct chapter, as summarized by Justia. Those are the statutes and penalty ranges prosecutors could rely on as the case moves forward.
Who Is Myles Jack
Jack is a former UCLA linebacker who entered the NFL as a second-round draft pick in 2016 and spent several seasons in the league, most recently appearing in games in 2023, according to his player profile on ESPN. He also became the majority owner of the Allen Americans hockey team in 2023, according to local coverage. The team said that family members would provide a statement, FOX 4 Dallas-Fort Worth reported.
Investigation Ongoing
Local reporting noted that online jail records did not immediately clarify whether Jack was still being held or had posted bond, and authorities have not said who originally requested the welfare check. Investigators have not released additional details as the probe continues, according to The Dallas Morning News.
