A Hunter Huss High School teacher faces serious allegations—Victoria Lynn Powell, a 31-year-old physical education teacher, has been charged with two counts of indecent liberties with a child. According to QC News, the warrants, issued on December 1, allege that Powell engaged in actions "for the purpose of arousing and gratifying sexual desire" with a student under 16 years of age on November 1.
Gaston County Schools confirmed that Powell, who was hired in August 2021 and is under a contract for the 2024-2026 school years, was swiftly suspended with pay on November 14, soon to be following the allegations. The county's school district has opted to continue paying Powell while investigations unfold. Court records highlight the gravity of these charges, as Powell is currently being held without bond, according to Gaston Gazette.
A deeper layer to this troubling scenario is Powell's connection to the church community. She is not only a teacher but was also known as a church youth group leader, as reported by Assistant District Attorney Jason Meulemans. The investigation included searching Powell's phone, which revealed text messages that corroborated the student's allegations. The nature of these messages has not been made public.
Citizens of Gaston County are reacting with dismay at the charges. Mary Jackson, a parent of a student at Hunter Huss High School expressed her concerns, saying, "The idea that it’s a teacher sickens me because we trust our children with you," Jackson told WSOC TV. Jackson also described Powell as a once "bubbly, smiley" figure who students felt comfortable gravitating towards—a sentiment now overshadowed by current events.
While the community grapples with these distressing developments, Powell awaits her next court appearance. Her case is due back in Gaston County court on a yet to be announced date, during which time the legal process is expected to provide further details surrounding these allegations.
