Gaston County Police confirmed the county’s 20th rabies case of 2025. On December 17, a dog in Bessemer City showed possible exposure to a rabid skunk, prompting a response from local authorities, according to the Gaston County Police's Post.
The incident occurred on the 600 block of White Jenkins Road, where Animal Care and Enforcement Specialists impounded a skunk showing neurological symptoms, raising concern for rabies. The exposed dog, whose vaccination had lapsed, received a booster from its veterinarian. No humans were reported to have been in contact with the skunk.
The skunk was sent to the NC Laboratory of Public Health in Raleigh and tested positive for rabies. On Friday, enforcement specialists canvassed the neighborhood to inform residents of the risk and check the rabies vaccination status of pets.
The Gaston County Police Department’s Animal Care and Enforcement Division emphasized the importance of keeping pets’ rabies vaccinations up to date to protect both animals and the community. They also notified the Gaston County Department of Health and Human Services, highlighting the importance of coordination between police, public health, and the community. With the high number of rabies cases this year, pet owners are reminded to maintain proper vaccinations.
