The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is currently probing an officer-involved shooting in Bartow County, as confirmed by a statement from the agency. The incident, which led to the death of 39-year-old Dylan Burl Rice, unfolded after law enforcement attempted to serve a search warrant at a residence located on GA-20 Spur, in the Cartersville area.
At the request of the Bartow County Sheriff’s Office, the GBI reported that deputies and State Fire Marshal agents executing a warrant in a death investigation encountered resistance from Rice. Flashbangs failed to make him exit, and he later appeared at the back door with a firearm.
Officers first used non-lethal methods, including foam and pepper rounds, to subdue Rice. The situation escalated when he allegedly aimed his weapon at deputies, prompting them to fire and fatally shoot him. The GBI later determined the weapon was a pellet air rifle.
An autopsy will be conducted at the GBI Medical Examiner's Office to clarify the circumstances of Rice's death. After completing its investigation, the GBI will submit findings to the Cherokee Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office for review.
