The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is currently aiding the Elbert County Sheriff's Office (ECSO) after a violent spree in Elberton, GA, where two individuals were killed in separate but related incidents. As reported by the GBI, the first event unfolded when ECSO responded to a 911 call on Saturday, November 29, revealing that Moriah Lane Mills, aged 31, had allegedly shot a man near the 1500 block of Bowman Highway who subsequently named her as the assailant before she fled.
Continuing the search for Mills, a deputy encountered an apparent single-car accident on Pulliam Road in Dewy Rose, where Mills was then discovered with a handgun, she refused to comply with demands to drop the weapon and ultimately took her own life; also within the wreckage, Refugio Torres, aged 62, was found deceased, both he and Mills were pronounced dead at the scene and subsequently transported to the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsies, the surviving victim is recovering in a local hospital, as detailed by GBI.
The dual investigations into the shootings and surrounding circumstances remain progressive, and the GBI is calling for public cooperation—those with information related to these events can reach out to the GBI Regional Investigative Office in Athens at 706-552-2309, provide anonymous tips by calling 1-800-597-TIPS (8477), or online through the GBI's tip submission portal, and the agency also encourages using the See Something, Send Something mobile app if pertinent.
As this case continues to develop, all collected evidence along with the GBI's findings will be forwarded to the Northern Judicial Circuit for a thorough review.
