Genesee County Sheriff's Office K-9s, Bailey and Kolt, are set to be outfitted with bullet and stab protective vests, courtesy of a donation from the non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s Inc. As reported by ABC12, these vests are not only a safeguard but also a testament to community support, with Richard Mongeau of Seekonk, Massachusetts, having sponsored the vests. They will be embossed with the phrase, “This gift of protection provided by Vested Interest in K9s, Inc.”
Expected to arrive within 10 weeks, these vests are part of a larger commitment by Vested Interest in K9s Inc. to protect law enforcement dogs nationwide. Since their inception in 2009, the charity has provided more than 6,335 vests, according to a report by WNEM. Each vest is valued at $1,800, comes with a five-year warranty, and, according to the Genesee County Sheriff's Office, there are an estimated 30,000 law enforcement K-9s across the United States that stand to benefit from such donations.
Furthering the cause of K-9 safety, Vested Interest in K9s Inc. has cast a wide net of support for their four-legged recipients. "Through private and corporate donations, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. has provided over 6,225 vests valued at $6.9 million to K9s in all 50 states," the Genesee County Sheriff's Office mentioned on their Facebook page. These vests are made in the United States, custom-fitted, and certified by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ).
For those looking to contribute, the organization accepts tax-deductible contributions of any amount, while a single donation of $1,050 will sponsor a vest. Information regarding donations, event listings, and volunteer opportunities can be sourced directly from their website or by mailing contributions to their P.O. Box in East Taunton, MA. The nonprofit's compassion for K-9 officers reinforces the essential role these dogs play in law enforcement and the community's responsibility to ensure their safety and well-being.
