
The Thanksgiving holiday period in Georgia was marred by tragedy, with state officials reporting a series of traffic incidents that resulted in numerous fatalities and injuries. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the Georgia State Patrol disclosed that 10 fatal crashes occurred during the 102-hour travel period, ultimately leading to 11 deaths statewide.
Between Wednesday evening and late Sunday night, Georgia State Patrol troopers responded to over 498 crashes, resulting in 236 injuries. During the same period, officers conducted more than 23,000 traffic stops, made 422 DUI arrests, issued over 17,200 warnings, and handed out 11,249 citations. The citations included 6,200 for seatbelt violations, 226 for child-restraint infractions, and more than 680 for distracted driving, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.
The Georgia State Patrol and local police agencies, including Albany, Atlanta, DeKalb, Gwinnett, and Glynn counties, reported traffic fatalities over the holiday period. Bob Nulman, a national ambassador for Mothers Against Drunk Driving, whose son was killed by a drunk driver in 1987, urged drivers to plan ahead and avoid impaired driving, calling it a serious and preventable danger, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.
According to the Georgia Department of Public Safety, the Thanksgiving travel period from November 26 to 30 saw nearly 500 crashes across the state, resulting in approximately 236 injuries and 12 fatalities. Officials note that these figures are preliminary and may be updated, highlighting the ongoing risk of traffic incidents during holiday travel, as reported by Atlanta News First.
